EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR POSTING


The Alabama Defense Lawyers Association (ADLA) is an association of nearly 950 attorneys dedicated to the defense of civil actions and the promotion of fairness and integrity in the justice system. The mission of the ADLA is to bring together lawyers of Alabama who devote a substantial amount of their professional time to the handling of civil defense cases. This association facilitates the exchange among members of information, ideas, techniques and court rulings relating to the handling of civil defense litigation. These exchanges are intended to improve the skills of civil defense lawyers, elevate the standards of trial practice, and safeguard the rights of defendants in civil litigation.


ADLA also seeks to encourage high standards of trial practice in conjunction with similar associations in other legal areas. ADLA seeks to support the work of improving the adversary system of jurisprudence in Alabama courts, eliminating court congestion including unnecessary delays and promote improvements in the administration of justice.


POSITION OVERVIEW


The Executive Director is ADLA's chief executive officer who leads the execution of ADLA's mission.  The Executive Director is directly responsible to the Board of Directors which sets Association policy. The Executive Director serves as a non-voting member of the Board.  The Executive Director is charged with skillfully advising the Board and managing and representing the long-term vision and strategic direction of the Association.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Recruit and Retain Members Including, but not Limited to, Personal Visits with Law Firms  
  • Propose and Execute Methods of Boosting Interest and Member Participation in ADLA
  • Association Leadership
  • Long-Range Planning
  • Risk Management
  • Budgeting
  • Stewardship/Oversight of Financial Operations Including Management of ADLA Accounts, Preparation of Financial Statements, Tax Returns, Investments, Accounts Receivables and Payables
  • Ability to Efficiently Plan and Facilitate General Membership Meetings and Other Scheduled Educational/Social Events
  • Vendor and Event Venue Negotiation
  • Fundraising and Sponsorship Solicitation
  • Oversee Association Publications Including Solicitation of Content and Advertisements
  • Strategy for Implementation of Member Benefits
  • Member, Staff and Board of Directors Relations
  • Office Management Skills
  • Collaborate with Officers to Set Board Meeting Agendas
  • Organize and Attend Board of Directors Meetings
  • Administer Expert Witness Searches
  • Facilitate Formation and Operation of Law School Chapters of ADLA
  • Facilitate Visibility of Association Through Personal Involvement in Legal and Community Organizations as Directed by Board
  • Assist with Trial Academy and Deposition Boot Camp
  • Develop and Implement Modern Methods of Keeping ADLA Members Informed and Engaged Through all Means of Communication Including Social Media
  • Regularly Communicate with Directors of Other State Defense Organizations to Increase Awareness of Trends in the Defense Bar
  • Regularly Communicate with DRI to Maximize Cooperative Opportunities
REQUIREMENTS


Skills:              Communication skills both verbal and written, public relations, basic understanding and experience in legal and legislative affairs (experience preferred), budgeting and fiscal management, social media, computer operations and support, organizational skill and creativity, board and organizational governance, demonstrated leadership ability, ability to work effectively and build long-term relationships with members, vendors, board of directors and related defense lawyer organizations, ability to travel (sometimes overnight) on a monthly basis.


Education:         Bachelor's Degree required.


Salary:               Negotiable.


Location:           Alabama preferred.
